From Diagnosis to Triumph: My Journey as a MALT Lymphoma Survivor

Hey, y’all! I’m Rebecca Raffle, an executive chef and entrepreneur from Indianapolis. Today, I want to share a deeply personal chapter of my life—my battle with MALT lymphoma, a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and how I emerged stronger on the other side.

This is a topic that is very hard for me to talk about. Going through chemotherapy was horrible, for me, my family, and my friends. I am hoping by telling my story I can help others going through the same thing.

The Unexpected Diagnosis

In late 2011, I was living in San Francisco, where I had gone to college.

Life was busy, and I felt constantly fatigued. I chalked it up to the hustle and bustle of daily life. However, when I started experiencing persistent stomach discomfort and unexplained weight loss, I knew something wasn’t right.

After a series of tests, my doctor delivered the news: I had MALT lymphoma, a rare form of cancer affecting the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue in my stomach (2012).

Lymphoma runs in my Dad’s side of my family. This was the worst news my family could receive, as we had been affected by cancer before.

Hearing the word “cancer” felt like the ground had been pulled out from under me.

I was scared, confused, and worried about my family’s future, knowing how expensive medical treatments and therapies can be.

Navigating Treatment

The treatment journey was challenging. I underwent chemotherapy - RITUXAN® (rituximab) and Methotrexate - which, over time, put me into remission. The side effects were tough—nausea, fatigue, and emotional ups and downs. But with the unwavering support of my family and friends, I found the strength to keep going.

I also connected with others facing similar battles. Reading stories from fellow survivors provided comfort and hope.

Rebecca Raffle - “When your hair starts falling out it does so in visible patches around your head. You find a lot of hair on your pillow in the morning and that can be very scary. My brother helped, so seeing my hair like that wouldn’t be so upsetting. I lost a large amount of weight, very quickly. The challenge becomes fighting off feeling so cold all of the time.”

Embracing a New Perspective

Surviving cancer changed me in profound ways. It taught me the value of resilience and the importance of listening to my body. I became more compassionate toward myself and others facing health challenges.

This experience also reignited my passion for food science and innovation, leading me to explore new culinary ventures with a renewed sense of purpose.

Giving Back and Raising Awareness

Today, as a cancer survivor, I feel a deep responsibility to raise awareness about MALT lymphoma and support others on their journeys.

Sharing my story is one way I hope to inspire and encourage those facing similar challenges. If you’re interested in learning more about lymphoma and reading other survivors’ stories, organizations like the Lymphoma Research Foundation offer valuable resources.

Looking Forward

Life after cancer is a continuous journey of growth and gratitude. I just had my 10-year tests (one does this every 5-years during remission) and the results were great. I’m dedicated to using my platform to educate others about the importance of early detection and to advocate for health and wellness in our community.

Through my culinary creations and personal experiences, I aim to make a positive impact and inspire resilience in others.
